Saved 59% This Week

My percentage of savings is way low compared to usual. The grocery deals were few and far between this week. And, since I didn't end up shopping at either CVS or Walgreens (where you get the most bang for your buck) the percentage looks measly. I shouldn't complain. I still saved more than 50% on groceries and have Breyers in the freezer.

My Shopping Plans

Many readers have asked how I stay withing my budget each week and save so much. I've started to post my weekly shopping plans, so everyone can see my thought process for shopping and saving.

I've been posting my shopping plans for six week. Overall, my plans have been quite boring. Is it just me being stocked up on most items, or do think the great deals have been few and far between also?

Here is what I plan to shop for this week:

Aldi: I picked up the basics and cheap produce. Milk, creamer, eggs, pineapple, strawberries, Roma tomatoes, and lettuce. Spent: $11.76

CVS: Since I'm not a big Fig Newton fan, I was going to skip CVS, but maybe I should stop and see if they have the Oral-B toothbrushes in stock. It's hard to pass up a money-maker at CVS since you don't need fillers to use your ECBs.

Walgreens: I haven't shopped at Walgreens in weeks. Maybe that is why I've been bored with shopping lately. Jenny B mentioned in one of her comments she found Walgreen weirdly thrilling because you never know what to expect. Hmmm. Maybe I should dig out my Stayfree coupons and head to Walgreens for a thrill.

Target: I can get excited about Targets deals this week. Well, at least the Breyers and Ben & Jerry's. I only have one of the Target insert and not much space in the freeze, so I'll be picking up (3) Breyers and (2) Ben & Jerry's. I'll need dog food soon, so I'll save my $5 giftcard to purchase Dog Chow later. Somehow having a Giftcard takes the "bite" out of the price of dog food. Projected to spend: $10.95

Shop 'n Save: I don't usually shop at Shop 'n Save unless they offer $10 off $50. The Old El Paso seasoning, Small Steps napkins, and Red Gold tomatoes are good deals this week, but I'm stocked up on seasoning and napkins. I don't think it's worth my time to stop and see how they might deal with the .75 Red Gold coupons.

Schnucks: Nothing better than Breyer's, unless it's Breyer's with Smucker's Carmel topping. Projected to spend: $10.00
  • Smucker's Topping
  • Cilantro
  • Boneless, Skinless Chicken Breasts
Dierbergs: Mrs. T's Pierogies are a great deals this week, but I've bought them in the past and can't say they are a family favorite. We ate one package and the second package got juggled around the freezer for months. I'm not taking up freezer space for something we don't eat. Projected to spend: $7.33
  • Palermo's Pizza - If there is room in the freezer after I squeeze the ice cream in.
  • Fresh Express Complete Salad Kit - $2.50 isn't a great deal, but I've got room in the budget this week.

What are you shopping for this week?

FREE Thumb Socks - Join the Fight to Stop Texting While Driving

I love this freebie. DoSomething.org and Sprint are declaring war on thumbs and want you to join the fight to stop texting while driving.

Oder Thumb Socks to show you're against texting and driving.

I'm ordering these for my husband. Last night, my husband was driving and my fourteen-year-old and I were in the car. My husband gets a text and he pulls out his phone to read it. I nearly went ballistic. As adults, we sometimes forget what are actions are teaching our children. Sorry Hubby, I might have pulled out my phone too.

Thanks, Cindy at Living Rich with Coupons!

Printable Coupon: .75 off a Mission Product

Print your .75 off any (1) Mission Product coupon.

This link takes you to a Kroger website, but the coupon is a manufacturer coupon and makes no mention of Kroger. I was able to print two per computer.

This coupon should make for a good deal this time of year.

Thanks, Printable Coupons and Deals!

Beer Rebate - Up to $25 on Chips, Meat and Produce

Three rebates and a coupon is in this brochure.
  • Compliments of Dos Equis
  • $1 off coupon for Cholula Hot Sauce, 5 or 12 oz. (expires 6/20/10)
  • Get $5 by mail with purchase of (3) bags of tortilla chips
  • Get $10 my mail with purchase of $20 worth of fresh meat and/or seafood
  • Get $10 by mail with purchase of $20 worth of fresh produce (avocados, limes, tomatoes, etc.)
  • Rebate offer Starts 4/1/10 - Expires 5/15/10
  • No beer purchase required in Missouri, AL, AR, CT, HI, IN,KY, ME,NC,NJ,NY,UT OR WV.
  • UPC codes must be submitted
  • Requests must be postmarked no later than 5/28/10

Edit: All purchases mut be made on the same date. (Thanks, coupon.girl!)

UPC codes for produce don't always exist. Reader Lisa phoned the rebate processing company and was told as long as the receipt show what the product is, then it is ok. (Thanks, Lisa!)

For those not familiar with beer rebates, you periodically will find a rebate offer with a beer display. In Missouri no beer purchase is ever required. The qualifying products are things you probably buy anyway. I've seen them for meat, cheese, salty snack, produce, soda and many more everyday items.

When I find a rebate form, I look back through my saved receipt, find the qualifying products within the purchase dates, fill out and mail the form, and wait for my FREE money.

I found this rebate form at a Schnucks, but you might find them at any retailer that sells beer. If you don't find this rebate form this week, keep looking. It is fairly common that the forms appear very close to the end of the offer period.

Thanks, Dos Equis!

Corona - $5 on Chips & Salsa

If you haven't shopped at Aldi, or it has been a while:
1. Make sure you have a quarter to unlock a shopping cart. The carts are like luggage carts at the airport. You rent them for a quarter, and you get your quarter back when you return the cart.
2. Take your own bags. Aldi does not provide free bags for your groceries.
3. Aldis now accepts debit cards.
4. Aldis does not accept coupons

Sunday's St Louis Post-Dispatch has Two coupon inserts - SmartSource and Redplum.

No $10 off $50 at Shop 'n Save this week.

Some of my favorite coupons this week:
  • B2G1 Prairie Farms Yogurt cups
  • $5 off Aveeno Ageless Vitality product
  • $1.50 off Red Baron Pan Pizza or Pan Pasta
  • $1 off McCormick Seasoning Blend, Spice, Herb, Extract or Food Color
  • $1 off Wholly Guacamole or Wholly Salsa
  • $1 off Margartiaville Margarita Mix
  • $1 off Marcal Small Steps napkin, bath tissue or facial tissue

  • $1 off Nivea Body Wash for Men
  • .50 off Mahatma Rice
  • .55 off Sara Lee Delightful Bread, Buns or Bagels
  • .40 off Pepperidge Farms Swirl Bread, Bagels or English Muffins

Remember: You want multiple coupons to use when a product is at a rock bottom price. When it's a good coupon insert week, I purchase 4 or 5 papers and sometimes acquire more. At first, I thought it was crazy to spend money to save money. But I've always saved much more than my $1 investment.

DEAL$, Dollar Tree and Sam's Club sell the Sunday Post-Dispatch for $1. The early edition is published on Saturday and it includes all the coupon inserts. And they usually still have Sunday papers left on Monday. Find the Deal$ , Dollar Tree or Sam's Club closest to you.

Saved 69% This Week

I didn't save a ton of money this week, but two of My Favorite Things were on sale. I was definitely doing the Julie Andrew Happy Dance.

Schnucks
I loved picking up the free solo cups, but they don't feel very Earth-friendly even though they say they are made of 20% post-consumer recycled content.

Before sales & coupons: $63.67
Total spent: $12.30
Total saved: $51.37 for 81%

Dierbergs
Finally, Bounty on sale. I'm going to put a roll of Bounty under the sink (for me to use) and leave the Smart Steps on the counter. My family sure goes through less of the cheap paper towel. The guys in the family have finally learned not to blow their noses on paper towel. Thank you, Smart Steps!

Before sales & coupons: $32.80
Total spent: $12.23
Total saved: $20.57 for 63%

Aldi
I did stop back and pick up some 99 cent strawberries that aren't in the picuture.

Comparable Schnuck price: $15.48
Total spent: $10.58
Total saved $4.90 for 32%

My Splurge
I really like Schnucks' bakery buns, and since my husband listed Hollandaise Sauce Mix as one of his favorite things, I may as well spend some of my "splurge funds."

Spent: $5.97

Weekly Totals
Before sales & coupons: $111.95
Total spent: $35.11
Total saved: $76.84 for 69%

Year to Date Totals
Spent: $677.74 ($42 weekly average)
Saved: $2260.95 ($141 weekly average)

Splurge Funds: $113.66
