Welcome TLC's Extreme Couponing Viewers

Love or hate TLC's Extreme Couponing; it is creating a huge interest in couponing.  If the price of gas and the steepest rise in grocery prices in 37 years wasn't already making individuals think about how they could save some money.

At first glace the show looks way over the top, after all is reality TV.  But, I think there is a lot to learn from the show that the non-couponer might have missed.

Menu Plan - It doesn't matter how much money you save, if you don't have the ingredients to put a meal together at home.

Budget - New deals pop up daily.  You can spend twice as munch money as you ever did before, drive yourself, and your family crazy if you don't know when enough is enough.

Know Coupon Policies -  The show did address this issue, but I can't stress enough - know the store coupon policies before you shop.  I'm sure the couponers in the show did, but reality TV needs a little drama.

Personal & Household Products - These are the easiest products to stockpile.   It's hard to believe at first, but  Walgreens and CVS is where couponers pick most of these items up for FREE

Order Large Quantities in Advance - If you'll remember the woman buying yogurt - she had boxes of yogurt at checkout.  She didn't get boxes  off the self. She must have contacted the store manager several days in advance and placed a special order. Shelf clearers are not looked upon favorably by store managers or other shoppers.

It Takes a Village - Couponers don't find and figure out all these deals themselves.  There are a ton of resources online.  If you're in the St Louis area, follow Coupon STL by email newsletter, Facebook or Twitter @Coupon STL

You're turn.  What are the best tips you can pass on after watching  Extreme  Couponing?

Guest post by Rebecca at Coupon Phenomenon

Don’t you just love the rush you get when you finally roll your cart up to the register and see that total start soaring only to plummet all the way back down. I know I do. I love that rush that comes from couponing. That’s why when I was asked to appear on TLC’s Extreme Couponing, I jumped at the chance. For the past several years I have been couponing and saving more money than I ever thought I could. I have been able to buy a house, go on vacations and keep a nice lifestyle, all with the use of coupons.

Hi, I’m St Louis’ Extreme Couponer, Rebecca. I am your typical 25 year-old, I like to go out, play sports, work a full-time job, and I coupon! I decided to be on TLC’s extreme couponing because I wanted to show how coupons could change someone’s life and how it has changed mine for the better. I wanted to be able to show that it was possible to coupon on a small budget with limited time. I hope that with this show I was able to accomplish all of that. And I hope that when you watch it you will see that as well.

After seeing how people in other cities were able save with double coupons, it was a bit inspiring. St Louis grocery stores double coupons but not as much as the stores featured on Extreme Couponing. But what wasn’t featured was Shop n Save’s wonderful “no coupon Thursday.” I love the Thursdays when Shop N Save is offering $10 of $50, it just makes my week! That $10 off $50 gives me more wiggle room in my budget which I am able to get fresh produce and meat, milk and eggs! Double coupons can’t give you that!

I hope you all will Tune in this Wednesday, April 6th at 8/8:30 pm at check-out TLC’s new series Extreme Couponing. My trip to Shop N Save where I was able to get $542 of groceries down to $25, including beer, will be featured on the 8:30 pm episode. You will also be able to hear more about the show and a few of my couponing tips the next morning on FOX’s morning news broadcast.

From the press release:

"Some of the people profiled in the series include Montgomery Village, MD’s J’aime, a paralegal who brings her prides herself on her couponing professionalism while scoring $1900 worth of merchandise for $103; Jessica, from Caldwell, ID, who spent just $7 for $680 worth of goods; St Louis, MO’s Rebecca is a second-generation stockpiler who takes home $542 of items for $25; and it only costs Tiffany from Spring, TX $40 to take home items valued at $1100."

Coupon STL reader Nicole saw TLC filming  at Shop 'n Save the week of 2/14/11. It might be fun to try and figure out what Rebecca bought before you see the show.
